A pile of wood built on the ground can be used as stationary light source and is required to roast raw meat and fry chicken eggs or pancakes. Fire cannot be built inside timber houses and log cabins (needs verifying about inside stone mansions). However, by placing a hearth fire in the cabin and then creating a new one in a different location, the hearth fire is reverted back into a pile of sticks which can then be normally lit. Leaving the cabin after the fire is lit will revert it once again back to a pile of sticks, creating a reusable fire.
