- Ore Smelter (Charcoal for fuel)
Find a cave:
If you are going to be mining for the first time without help from someone more experienced or using an existing mining spot then you should start by finding a cave. They are not easy to find and they tend to guarded by other players but if you can find one and it unoccupied then you can get started.
Find a place to mine:
Start by going into the cave for a while since you can't mine near the entrance. Once you walk about 50 tiles in, then attempt to mine by clicking mine then clicking on a wall. You will either get a message saying you can't mine (if this happens that means you need higher strength and/or higher quality axe.) or you will actually start mining. When you do start to mine, watch what you get.
Sample the spot:
If you see rocks dropping then you will probably want to move to a different spot to try and find ore. Once you find a spot giving you ore, mine it till the spot disappears. You can attempt to smelt the ore in hopes of finding actual ore. If you get ore after smelting then you can turn the ore to nuggets to build Mine Support and then it becomes a lot easier to safely mine. If you have normal luck you probably won't get actual ore your first couple attempts. I had a strategy that worked well enough to stop cave in's before having Mine Supports: After you mine your first spot rather than trying to dig farther move two tiles down then mine. I haven't had a cave in since I started using the strategy, but it could have easily been luck so be careful.
Good luck and I hope this helped!
